I don’t get social media. Sure, I blog here and there and have MyBlogLog, Flickr and LinkedIn accounts but I really am not social media savvy. There are people like Rand Fishkin, Neil Patel,Cameron Olthuis and others that get social media. In fact they speak about it at industry events. They talk about the latest social media tricks and tell about nifty things they’ve done for clients in the social media space using the latest linkbait tactics. But me, I just don’t get social media, hard as I try.
As I cruise the web looking for social media ideas I often run across people that make me realize I’ll never get social media. My lastest discovery are two sisters out of Singapore, Nicole Chen and her younger sister, Celeste. They not only get social media, they speak it. It’s their “lingua franca”.
These adorably cute girls (sorry Lisa, you don’t have a monopoly on adorably cute) take to social media like fish to water. Type their names in Google or any other search engine and they are everywhere and on all kinds of social media platforms. They’re on Hotspotters, MyBlogLog, Bumpzee, Vume, Friendster, Zango, YouTube, Flickr, BlogFlux, you name it. They blog and vlog and express themselves in a variety of ways. Singing, dancing, playing the piano and just letting you catch a glimpse of their lives is how they have become social media darlings. They were recently highlighted in the Lifestyle section of the Singapore Sunday Times which detailed how they’ve picked up 16,000 friends on Friendster.
If you want to learn about social media, take a lesson or two from Nicole and Celeste. They sure do get social media. On the other hand, I don’t think I’ll ever get it.
