[...] When I first blogged about Fresh Egg’s SEO Intern Training Programme I commented “this internship is a great shot for someone”. Little did I realize that I would find blog fodder to continue this story. Of course when I heard that Rand Fishkin of SEOmoz had sent Rebecca to this training I had to follow the story. After all how many people could say they’ve had the opportunity to learn from such seo luminaries as Rand and Ammon Johns? Well now Rebecca can say that since she passed the training program “with flying colours” according to Ammon. She’s now also the first (and so far only) SEO practitioner in the world to have worked with both Rand Fishkin and myself, and to have learned from both. It will be interesting to watch her future career and see what she does from such an interesting starting point in her first year in this industry. Of course, it comes as no surprise, I’m certain, that Rebecca came through the training and graduated with flying colours. [...]

Please send me a copy of that certification when you can. My email can be found on my about page on this blog. There's no doubt that anyone completing your training need only mention that they trained with you and Lee and if the employer knows anything that will be enough.

I'm not against certification training per se as I think a lot of sem's could learn a thing or two at any of the training courses out there, I know I could. Since most have learned on their own they may be missing some skills that these training programs would cover.

My goal at one time was to get as many certifications or training certificates as I could, compare them and share what I learned. Well I did get one back in 2000 from JER Group but since then nada, been too busy.

So I'll keep on blogging about the sem seo education going on out there and live vicariously through people like Rebecca. Maybe one day I can manage to become a Fresh Egg intern but until then I'll just keep on bloggin'.

I hear you about the experience. Employers don't ask to see your certificates, they ask you about your experience. Besides that, SEO just can't be learned without practice.

SEM is still in its infancy. So much is still experimental. So much must still be based on innovation. The theory is meaningless until put into practice. SEO that isn't practiced and practical is just an empty hypothesis. Perhaps it is art, but it sure isn't marketing.

As my friend and colleague Lee Colbran so aptly puts it, you need to get your hands mucky.

Not that people taking our course won't get a very attractive certificate to hang on their wall if they wish. Its just that the valuable part isn't the paper. It is the reference and experience. The confidence of knowing you have worked alongside some very serious professionals and pulled your weight in the team.

I suspect that some interns may also like the idea of quoting us as a job reference if they ever want to, as well.

Thanks for noticing my blog. I agree that this is definitely a unique form of training. As you've probably surmised from my blog, I'm not big on certification or training unless it involves some real world experience.

Your comment "working alongside some very established SEOs" is an understatement if I've ever heard one. If this were any seo firm I don't think I'd follow the story so closely. The fact that Rand sent someone from SEOmoz just validates my interest.

I look forward to hearing more about the process and Rebecca's feedback. I'll certainly keep on blogging about it.

Thanks for the kind words.

I am greatly looking forward to this programme, as it is a quite unique form of training. 2 weeks of full involvement inside an SEO company. Working alongside some very established SEOs. Nothing held back. No questions ducked.

I'm so looking forward to finding what Rebecca makes of it all.
